Experimental Shadow Portraits
This portrait series explores the expressive power of intentional harsh shadows. The goal of this project was to create dramatic lighting that divides the face, leaving half of the portrait in deep shadow to evoke mystery, contrast and emotional depth.
This was an experimental portrait exercise, inspired by classic dramatic lighting techniques that are less commonly used in modern portrait photography today. The lighting setup consisted of a strong lateral key light placed to one side of the subject, paired with a second light illuminating the background to create separation and depth. This combination allowed the subjects to stand out while maintaining a cinematic and moody atmosphere.
The editing process was completed using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance contrast, refine skin tones and preserve the intentional darkness and dramatic shadows that define the series.

About the work
This project allowed me to experiment with lighting direction, depth, and emotion while stepping outside current portrait trends. It represents my interest in cinematic aesthetics and intentional visual storytelling through photography.
“Light reveals, but shadow tells the story.”
